How to Press DTF Transfers: Step-by-Step Instructions for Perfect Results

Pressing a DTF transfer correctly is the difference between a vibrant, long-lasting design and one that peels or cracks after the first wash. Follow this step-by-step guide to get professional results every time.

What You'll Need

• Heat press machine (strongly recommended) or household iron
• Teflon sheet or parchment paper
• Your garment or substrate
• Your InkGlint DTF transfer

Recommended Heat Press Settings

Note: Settings may vary depending on your specific heat press model, garment type, and fabric weight. Always do a test press on a scrap piece of fabric first.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1 — Pre-press your garment

Place your garment on the heat press and press for 3–5 seconds with no transfer. This removes moisture and wrinkles, giving you a flat, dry surface for the transfer to bond to.

Step 2 — Position the transfer

Place the DTF transfer on the garment with the printed side facing down (the matte/powdery side goes against the fabric). Position it exactly where you want it.

Step 3 — Cover with a Teflon sheet

Place a Teflon sheet or parchment paper over the transfer. This protects the film and distributes heat evenly.

Step 4 — Press

Close the heat press and apply pressure at 275–300°F for 10–15 seconds with medium-firm pressure. Do not lift the press early.

Step 5 — Peel

Open the press and peel the film while it's still hot or warm — within a few seconds of removing from the press. Peel slowly and at a low angle. If the design starts to lift with the film, press it back down immediately.

Step 6 — Optional second press

For extra adhesion and a smoother finish, place the Teflon sheet back over the transfer and press again for 5 seconds. This is especially recommended for athletic fabrics and polyester.

Compatible Fabrics

DTF transfers work great on:

• 100% cotton
• Polyester and poly blends
• Tri-blends
• Nylon
• Canvas and tote bags

Not recommended for: waterproof or coated fabrics, or any fabric that cannot withstand heat above 275°F.

Care Instructions for Pressed Garments

• Wait 24 hours before the first wash
• Wash inside out in cold water
• Tumble dry on low heat or hang dry
• Never iron directly on the transfer

Troubleshooting

• Transfer peeling at edges: Increase pressure or add a second press
• Colors look dull: Temperature may be too low — try 285°F
• Film won't peel cleanly: It may have cooled too much — reheat for 5 seconds and try again
• Design cracking after wash: Fabric may not have been pre-pressed dry enough, or pressure was too low
